Converting Cubes to Ottomans

A few years ago I ran into Target and came across a sale on the cutest cubes for $3 apiece. I ended up buying 10 of them thinking I could cover them with some neat fabrics and place them in different rooms around the house.

It took me a couple of years to finally get around to customizing the cubes, but I’m thrilled with how some of them turned out. Especially since I really don’t know how to sew well. But we needed extra seating for when family and friends come over to watch the games, so I figured I could cover a couple of the cubes for our keeping room.

I had some extra canvas from another project that would work well because it was a neutral color and heavy enough to withstand the wear and tear of people seating on it. I found a little trim that matched some of the other colors I had in the room. Although quite simple, they turned out pretty neat.

We have a really nice size bedroom and created a seating area opposite the bed. I always wanted to do an ottoman coffee table and this was the perfect space for it. I took four of the cubes and bolted them together to create the bones of the ottoman.

Pinning the ottoman slipcover

I found this off-white, upholstery fabric on the sale table at Hancock Fabrics that worked out nicely. After pinning several iterations to the cubes, I finally decided on box pleats at each corner. (Truthfully I mis-cut the fabric because my skills don’t always match my vision.)  The left over fabric from the window treatment was a nice contrast and along with the trim I had picked up for pillows, I think it gave the ottoman cover a custom, cohesive look.
